I am delighted to announce the arrival of yet another excellent line of gluten-free baked goods at Zabars!  This time the spotlight shines on Deborah Brenner’s Las Delicias Bakery.   

Deborah learned to bake at her Italian grandmother’s and mother’s knees in Buenos Aires, where elaborate  entertaining and spectacular culinary feats of derring-do were commonplace in her home.  So, when she began baking for a husband with Celiac disease, it was natural for her to refuse to settle for results that were merely close in texture to the “real thing”.  We are so thrilled that she is so driven, because these are truly wonderful, delicious treats made with top-quality ingredients that you will never notice are gluten-free.  Attention to detail, especially in the sourcing of ingredients and all along the path from concept to  end result, makes these products really stand out.

There were selections from Israel, France, Spain, Italy, UK, New York State, Wisconsin, etc, etc….. She had tasted every one and had much to say about each. The rich selection was comprised of both cholov Yisroel and non cholov Yisroel types. Made from cow’s milk, goat milk, raw milk, some were very pungent, some were very sharp, some were mild in taste and smell.

The Shiksa reviews Kinishes

The Shiksa in the Kitchen (A Fresh Approach to Jewish Cuisine and Culture) is a blog I just came across with a recent review Tori (the Shiksa) has done for NYC delis and knishes. 

She, like me and many people I know, is a fan of the knish - though she takes her interest in them to a wonderfully thorough place. Reading her review of 7 kinishes, including one here at Zabar's, you get a real sense for the state of the kinish in Manhattan today.
