It’s Earth Day today and we could not think of a better way to acknowledge it than a post dedicated to conserving our environment!
We will be sharing tips to live more sustainably and reduce our environmental impact with a few simple switches. Let’s get to it!
We love our takeaway coffees and think nothing of buying our drinks in disposable cups with plastic lids that are discarded after one use. To cut down on single use plastic waste, a good option to have on hand is a reusable insulated travel mug such as this one from Zabar’s that keeps your coffee warm / cool for up to 8 hours! Item can be purchased here:
Plastic bags are another thing that can be avoided and easily replaced with cotton canvas tote bags. Tote bags are reusable and last a long time with good care and proper use. We recommend washing the bags once in a while or if they get soiled for hygiene reasons.
Anyway, what’s cooler than carrying all your Nova, Coffee and Bagels home than with a Zabar’s heavy duty cotton canvas tote bag?! Click here to purchase.
Up on our Housewares Mezzanine level on the 2nd Floor of Zabar’s we carry many sustainable and eco-focused products.
Plastic straws had their share of media attention when a sea turtle was found with a piece wedged up its nose. In the US alone 500 million straws are used daily with 8.3 billion ending up in beaches worldwide.
So what can we do to prevent this and not contribute to the pollution? Few options: Paper Straws, reusable steel / glass straws or just refusing straws!
The steel brush comes separate from the straw brush but we highly recommend getting it as well! Gotta keep your straws clean so your beverage tastes fresh!
Food containers are useful have with you in case you have leftovers when eating out, or if you want to bring a packed lunch to work. They will save a ton (about 30 million tons in fact) of single-used plastic which can’t be recycled because of food residue, ending up in landfills.
What about food wrappers to store food and keep them fresh? Well in comes Bee’s Wrap that is a natural alternative to plastic wrap for food storage to the rescue!
As mentioned on their website:
Wrap cheese, half a lemon, a crusty loaf of bread, and fruits and vegetables.
Cover a bowl, or pack a snack for your next adventure.
Made with organic cotton, beeswax, organic jojoba oil, and tree resin.
Bee’s Wrap is washable, reusable and compostable. All the good stuff!
It may be daunting at first, but we can all do our part to live more sustainably so that future generations get to enjoy living in a clean and healthy environment for many years to come.
Every little effort counts and saves a bit of plastic from ending up in the landfill or oceans!
Happy Earth Day 2019!
