I use to live above Zabar's until 1965 when it was a hotel. I was one of the neighborhood kids there until I was 15 yrs. Zabar's were friendly in the area and ti us kids. They would give us samples and free things because we had little money. I have good memories of them and how neighborly they were. I was called the nickel pickle kid because they had barrels of pickles and I got one for 5 cents. 1950-1965 then family moved to Queens.
