I was born and raised in NY city, in a Jewish home, where eating bagels was a way of life. We took our bagels very seriously. When I moved to Israel as an adolescent, I had to survive without a ‘real’ bagel for years, like Moses in the desert.
Upon my return to NY as a young man in the 80’s, I joyfully rediscovered the deliciousness of a ‘true’ NY bagel from Zabars, the go-to location for all the gastronomical delicacies the world has to offer. My delight in bagels was so ingrained in my soul that in 1994 when I finally wrote my first hit one-man show: Avi Hoffman’s Too Jewish? - My logo included a bagel with a heart at it’s center.
In 1996, my family moved to South Florida, and for the past 17 years, I have convinced myself that the local bagels were ‘fine’, just as good as what I remembered in NY… Until… Until I received the package with the Zabar’s logo on it, the wonderful gift of bagels that landed on my doorstep and reminded me what a ‘true’ NY bagel really tastes like.
For 17 years I had deluded myself into believing that the 'so called' bagels I had been eating were the ‘real thing’, but with your delicious present, I was jolted back to reality - There is only ONE real Zabar’s Bagel, in a class all by itself.
So on this miraculous melding of Thanksgiving and Hanukkah, I want to thank YOU for reminding me of the true meaning of ‘bagel’.
I wish you and your family a healthy, joyful and prosperous holiday. I think of you every time I bite into your delicious bagels and savor the flavor of what a ‘real’ bagel is supposed to taste like.
