I moved to New York in 1962, a Virginia country girl straight out of college. My first introduction was a murder on my street days before I moved in. My second was Zabar's where I could sample more cheeses than I had known existed (was there anything beyond American and rat trap cheese?), where the sausages and breads opened my eyes to a new way of eating. Before I moved on to grad school the men at the cheese counter knew my name and were always encouraging me to try yet another cheese.
