With great sorrow and deepest affection, Zabar's announces the passing of our creative director, Andrea Watman, on June 14, 2011. Andrea was an employee of Zabar's for over 30 years. In addition to being our creative director, Andrea was head of our customer service department, our catering department, and all signage and graphics.
She was also responsible for heading up Zabar's award winning mail-order catalog, which was her pride and joy. All of this was done with a smile on her face and a sense of humor no matter what the situation. Andrea was loved and adored by all of us at Zabar's, and the love and caring that she gave to us all will be terribly missed and felt by us all.
Andrea was not just a loyal and dedicated employee but a true friend, a confidant, and a mother to us all. We will miss her dearly. Andrea is survived by her loving family, sister Joy Segal, brother-in-law Alan Segal, and nephews Ben and Sam, the loves of her life. -- From Andrea's Obituary, published in the New York Times
Eyewittness News visited Zabar's shortly after Andrea's passing to film this report. Watch it here:
""She was really the creative soul of Zabar's. She was also everybody's mother. She was like my mother," said Scott Goldshine, Zabar's General Manager.
"A lovely, lovely person. Whenever we had a complaint from a customer, she was the one that I would give the complaint, because she had a way with words," said Saul Zabar, Zabar's owner.
Waltman's legacy is her hundreds of recipes that can still be enjoyed." - From Eyewittness News, Read the full article
I’ll risk hyperbole here and say up front that the Butter Bell butter crock changed my life. Let me explain.
I’ve been obsessed with all things food related for something like 20 years now, such that my career is food-related, as are my vacations, requirements for potential neighborhoods to live in, and what I do for fun (cook) in my free time. The other side of this is that I am also willing to go to a lot more trouble to make things just so with my food than a less…focused person might be. I am particular. I don’t take a lot of shortcuts. I like things a certain way. This has been the case for decades.
Nevertheless, even I had resigned myself long ago to struggling with cold, hard butter which mangled my poor, soft baked goods. I had a butter-loving cat at the time, so that combined with stifling SE Michigan summers meant leaving it out on the counter was out of the question. I had all but forgotten the wonderful and simple pleasure of soft butter spread on fresh bread (not toast). And muffins. And banana bread. And popovers. And so on.
Then a friend told me about the Butter Bell butter crock, and all at once, every one of those barriers to spreadable butter fell away and in that small way, my life changed for the better. So now, ten years later, I’m spreading the word to all of you! Here’s how it works:
1) Pour about 1/3 cup of cold water into the base of the Butter Bell crock 2) Pack 1/2 cup (one stick) softened butter into the bell-shaped cup of the lid 3) Replace the lid into the crock. That's it!
The water creates an airtight seal, and combined with the crock, keeps the butter cool on your counter. Both actions prevent spoilage, even at room temperature. Ingenious! Want to see more? Here is a video:
Just because I love Butter Bells so much, Zabar’s has begun selling them, and we are introducing them with a bang (pun intended) over the Fourth of July on zabars.com.

I am delighted to announce the arrival of yet another excellent line of gluten-free baked goods at Zabars! This time the spotlight shines on Deborah Brenner’s Las Delicias Bakery.
Deborah learned to bake at her Italian grandmother’s and mother’s knees in Buenos Aires, where elaborate entertaining and spectacular culinary feats of derring-do were commonplace in her home. So, when she began baking for a husband with Celiac disease, it was natural for her to refuse to settle for results that were merely close in texture to the “real thing”. We are so thrilled that she is so driven, because these are truly wonderful, delicious treats made with top-quality ingredients that you will never notice are gluten-free. Attention to detail, especially in the sourcing of ingredients and all along the path from concept to end result, makes these products really stand out.
Note that Las Delicias baked goods are made right here in New York and reflect Deborah’s strong commitment to local, organic, and sustainable ingredients. They are also kosher! Zabar’s carries the Caramel Fleur de Sel Brownies (my personal favorite-sweet and salty together is the bomb!), Triple Chocolate Brownies, Peanut Butter Swirl Brownies, and White Chocolate Macadamia Brownies, pluse the Extraordinary Carrot & Pecan Muffins, Banana & Fresh Ginger Muffins, and Corn & Sweet Paprika (also awesome!) muffins. Brownies $3.29, Box of two muffins is $5.98. They’re already flying off their shelves just to the left of the bread counter, so check them out the next time you’re in the store.

If you were to ask cheese lovers to name all the Spanish cheeses they know, many would probably think of Manchego, and then get stuck. In fact there’s a wonderful, wide-ranging world of cheese from Spain that kind of slides under a lot of people’s radar here in the states.
I’m only one person so I don’t know how much I’m able to positively change this state of affairs, but I do get to post on the Zabar’s blog, so I’m going to do my part and tell you about one of my very favorite Spanish cheeses, Iberico.
Made in hot, dry central Spain, Iberico is a mixed milk, fairly hard semi-soft cheese that you might consider a more mysterious and nuanced cousin to Manchego, which it resembles in appearance. It can be aged from 6-12 months and is made from pasteurized milk. By law, the minimum blend of milks is 50% cow, 30% goat, and 10% sheep, and this combination results in an unusually complex flavor profile. The cow’s milk contributes smoothness and good lactic qualities, the goat, tartness and tang, and the sheep’s milk rounds everything off with a rich buttery creaminess. Iberico has many flavor notes to sing to you, but it isn’t intense or loud, so nearly everyone enjoys this cheese. It’s is a fantastic table cheese to be sure, and happily compliments a wide variety of wines, both reds and whites. It is also great in the kitchen! Try its savory richness inside of an omelet, grated over pasta with sautéed garlic, asparagus and cherry tomatoes, or make an incredible grilled cheese and roasted red pepper sandwich.
Iberico also has received a D.O.P. designation, which stands for Denominazione d’Origine Protetta. This means that the food is guaranteed authentic, is made by skilled artisans, and comes from a specific region. Given its high quality, delicious Iberico is a steal at $7.25/8oz. Iberico is available both in-store and from www.zabars.com.
