We are just days away from Memorial Day, known as the kick start for the summer barbecue season. We've got a great assortment of some of our wonderful products that I'll be sharing with you this week.
First on the list:
Sir Kensington Ketchup It's actually incredibly easy to sum up this Ketchup. Let's start with the ingredient list: Tomatoes, Cider Vinegar, red Bell Pepper, Honey, Brown Sugar, Green Onions, Olive Oil, Dijon Mustard, Salt, Lime Juice, Agave nectar, Black Pepper, Spices
How fun was that? This is the kind of food I want around me at all times. (For sale in our store.)
And what should this be enjoyed with? How about:
Delouis Fils Mayonnaise & Delouis Fils Garlic Mayonnaise Maison Delouis, which began in 1885 with the production of vinegars and mustards, now makes Mayonnaise and Sauce Aioli. Both full of deep, rich flavor, Delouis Mayonnaise is made with sunflower oil and a touch of fresh lemon, while their Sauce Aioli is mayonnaise heightened with the addition of garlic. Traditionally paired with seafood, platters of vegetables and poached fish, you should also try as a garnish for crabcakes or other fried fish. Or use as a topping for French Fries - just like the Dutch!
And of course, mustard!
Edmond Fallot Dijon Mustard in a Tin The distinct high quality and flavour of this speciality mustard is due to the traditional grinding of the mustard seeds with silex grindstones.
About 5 years ago I was living in a small New Hampshire town and, being both an avid home cook and also a bit competitive by nature, decided to enter a burger grill-off contest*. When thinking about what kind of burger to enter, I wanted to do something different than beef or turkey, to hopefully stand apart from the competition. “Lamb” immediately sprang to mind, and right after that, “Vindaloo”; the classic spicy, tangy Indian flavor combination. Letting my past experience eating in Indian restaurants inspire me, it was then only a short distance to the topping, garnishes and naan bread and my recipe was born.
This is the complete recipe I used in the competition, and is the one I serve to guests. The “heat level” depends greatly on the brand of vindaloo paste you use and how much you put in. I use a pretty fiery one and I would judge these at about a 4-5 on a hotness scale of 0-10. I’ve included less spicy variations below. Among my friends who love lamb (and big flavors) it is always a hit and I’ve given out the recipe many times. There are several steps but most of them can be done ahead and none of them are difficult. Plus, you can do as I do and make the simplified version listed in the variations below for weekday dinners. Lots and lots of flavor for minimal effort. Enjoy!

If it's time to refresh your pantry and do a little spring cleaning, I highly recommend you give these exceptional oils a try. They are brilliantly flavored and produced locally in the US.
About La Tourangelle Oils: A great deal has occurred in the world since the time La Tourangelle first began handcrafting oil 150 years ago in France, but thankfully their traditional process has remained virtually the same, only now the oils can be enjoyed fresh from California.
Their new oil mill, located in Woodland, California, is currently producing oil from nuts picked on the orchard next door. The oil artisans carefully selects nuts of the highest quality and lets them sun dry to preserve their natural flavors. They then hand-roast the nuts in cast iron pots, followed by a decantation process, cold-pressing and finally a light filtering. The result is an oil with elegant natural flavors, and a clearly discernable difference in quality from what is generally found in America.
If you haven't tried each of these types of oils, it might be time to try something new. Here are great uses for each variety:
Almond Oil
replace olive oil with almond oil in your favorite hummus recipe
replace 2-4 tablespoons of the butter with almond oil in a butter cookie recipe and add chopped toasted almonds-really amps up the almond flavor without that "extract flavor".
very nice in vinaigrettes for salads featuring citrus
Hazelnut Oil
fabulous in any vinaigrette (especially with dijon) when the salad includes cheese, most notably blue cheeses or gruyeres and fruits especially figs and pears
finish grilled or broiled fish with hazelnut oil
Walnut Oil
vinaigrette with shallots, dijon & sherry vinegar is my special house dressing for salads with cheese and apples and/or grapes
great vegetarian pasta; toss cooked pasta with minced sauteed garlic (in olive oil) chopped toasted walnuts, toasted breadcrumbs, red chili flakes, chopped parsley, salt and pepper to taste and drizzled with toasted walnut oil.
Sesame Oil
cold asian noodle salad; cooked soba or egg noodles, shredded carrots, scallions, thin sliced strips of red bell pepper and cucumber, minced garlic, grated ginger, rice vinegar, chopped parsley and/or cilantro, soy sauce, pinch of sugar, toasted sesame oil. Salt and pepper & chili oil/flakes to taste. Top with toasted sesame seeds.
include in asian marinade for any meat, fish or chicken with asian flavors.
Grapeseed Oil
very light and slightly fruity, so it's nice for citrus vinaigrettes for delicate baby greens.

City Harvest is one of NYC’s truly remarkable programs. City Harvest is a food rescue organization – food that would otherwise have gone to waste, perfectly good food, edible food, at times gourmet food. They accept food donations (and monetary donations) and this goes to people in NYC who are hungry.
Zabar’s is proud to support City Harvest’s food donation program. In January – March 2011 Zabar’s donated 11,890 pounds of food that was in turn distributed free of charge to community programs feeding hungry men, women and children in NYC.
Quick Facts about City Harvest:
This year City Harvest will rescue 28 million pounds of much needed food.
This food will be delivered to nearly 600 programs throughout the five boroughs.
City Harvest has 17 trucks and three bikes on the road rescuing food for New York's hungry.
Serving New York City for more than 25 years, City Harvest is the world's first food rescue organization, dedicated to feeding the city's hungry men, women, and children.
This year, City Harvest will collect 28 million pounds of excess food from all segments of the food industry, including restaurants, grocers, corporate cafeterias, manufacturers, and farms. This food is then delivered free of charge to nearly 600 community food programs throughout New York City using a fleet of trucks and bikes as well as volunteers on foot. Each week, City Harvest helps over 300,000 hungry New Yorkers find their next meal.
We received the bagels and thank you very much. They are wonderful. I especially like the asiago cheese ones. Our son and daughter-in-law are coming to New York in a couple of weeks and I told them to check out your store.
Again, thank you and we look forward to ordering more online in the future.
