Wasabi is a Japanese condiment like horseradish. It is usually sold as a powder or paste. The paste is preferable as many of the powders are not true wasabi. Caution: it is very hot!
Mayonnaise was invented in France in 1756 by a French chef. Richard Hellmann’s deli in New York served ready-made mayonnaise in 1905, first in wooden bowls and then in 1912, in wide-mouth glass bottles.

Being locked up in small spaces during a very long, cold winter can be hard. We know! But now that the weather is getting better, there’s nothing more we want to do than to get outside. We don’t even care what we are doing, we just want fresh air, sunshine and green grass. So why not go to the park and enjoy a lovely picnic? And of course no picnic would be complete without some cheese. Cheese is the perfect addition to any meal, especially a meal in the great outdoors. It requires little preparation, will not spoil without refrigeration for a few hours, pairs well with other picnic foods like sliced meats, crusty bread and olives, and most of all, will be loved by all. The only question left to answer is, which cheeses to take? We have the answer! We have selected a few of our favorites to help make your picnic picture-perfect.
First is Brillat Savarin. Leave the butter at home and cover your baguette with this luscious, buttery triple crème. Pair with fresh berries and a glass of Champagne to welcome in the warm weather with a bang! Second is Arina, beautifully white, this young Goat Gouda is perfect for a picnic because its texture makes it easy to cut, its flavor is sweet yet slightly sharp, and with just a little bit of goat tang at the end to make it absolutely delicious. Vente d’estate is perhaps the poster child for picnic cheeses. Covered in hay, this firm cow’s milk cheese is nutty and tart with just hints of grass. Last but not least is Shropshire Blue. This blue’s stunning color reminds us of the beautiful flowers that are blooming everywhere. Strong but not overpowering and slightly crumbly, this blue is the perfect end to a cheese plate and a picnic.

Wow, it has happened already. NYC is in the first of many heat waves to come this summer. It’s the first day we have the AC on at home and despite my objections, it’s a total relief.

Every time it rains more than one day in a row I get this feeling in my core of, oh will this dreary sky ever part! Luckily from my window here at Zabar’s I can see the brightness changing outside and my optimism for a sunny week & weekend in the 70s is being refueled. Ahhh.

Of Zabar's Espresso Crunch chocolate bar she writes:
"The aroma of this chocolate is less like strong coffee than a coffee shop. Close your eyes and imagine sitting on a soft couch in a cafe while a barista whirrs a cappuccino through the coffee maker and the cafe owner pulls a tray of brownies from the oven. That’s what this bar smells like: sweet, chocolate, a hint of coffee, baked goods.
The taste, however, is immediately coffee. And I’m not talking a muted mocha flavour, either – this chocolate pops like a dark and strong espresso. A few bites in, and the coffee fades into a background note that accentuates the smoky and woodsy notes of the chocolate. The nibs help in this regard too, by providing the occasional bitter jab of roasted cocoa as well as a textural contrast."

Shavuot is the Jewish holiday that marks the 49 days it took to travel from Egypt to Mount Sinai – that’s why it is celebrated 49 days after Passover. It is a tradition to eat dairy – and stay up all night and study. There are some who say it also marks the end of the harvest and the beginning of summer.
Ok, I gave up staying up all night years ago – but I do have such fond memories of Shavuot. Grandma Bertha made a dairy supper. Since my family always spent the summers at my grandparents house in Long Beach, NY I loved Shavuot. The weather was beautiful, and my family was together.
Grandma Bertha called this recipe “Lucshin & Cheese” – meaning noodles and cheese. She made her homemade coleslaw, cut fruit and dinner was served.
I make this dish all the time – to me, it is Jewish Soul Food. So even if you are not going to celebrate Shavuot this year I really recommend trying this simple pasta dish.
One of the benefits of working at Zabar’s is our Cheese Department sells fresh pot cheese. It sounds silly – but if you asked me my favorite thing at Zabar’s I might just say “Pot Cheese”. (If you’ve never had pot cheese I highly recommend it - it is similar to cottage cheese – but drier).
